In From the ColdCome and join the teamOn Saturday afternoons, from 2 PM to 6 PM, November to the end of March, Parkdale United Church offers hot meals, hospitality and pleasant company to the lonely and disadvantaged in the community. We believe that this is a concrete way of sharing the love and compassion of God with our neighbours. Volunteers help with a variety of tasks each week, usually in two-hour shifts. Sign up sheets, outlining the various tasks, are available at the four doors of the Sanctuary. They may be placed on the collection plate, left in the church office, or in the box outside the Chapel door. Good CitizenIf a good corporate
citizen can be described as a company that gives back something to the
community while, at the same time, earning a profit from its business
activities, then the Giant Tiger store on Wellington Street in the Hintonburg
neighbourhood fits the definition very well. The
Ottawa-based-and-owned store, which sustained serious damage in a fire in December,
2007, re-opened in March, 2008, as a newly-configured GT Express, with
an expanded bakery, dairy and deli area, plus larger grocery and produce
sections. In recognition of the
loyalty and support that the surrounding community has given to the store,
Giant Tiger gave back something to the community on the occasion of its
official re-opening. For each sale made on opening day, a dollar was donated to
charity by GT Express. Half of every
dollar was split between Parkdale’s In From The Cold program and the
Hintonburg Community Association’s Christmas dinner program. In addition,
$1,000 was donated to the Salvation Army’s Bethany Hope Centre for young
parents. Generosity
such as this by a corporate citizen helps to build and sustain a vibrant
community. |
